Inside Iconic Machines

My cutaway illustrations show automobiles and helicopters in a way they can never be seen in reality: as complete machines while revealing their internal structure. Bodywork or fuselage becomes transparent, while the cockpit, suspension, lines, gearboxes, combustion engines and turbines remain visible in their actual positions.

Every work begins with a real machine. Using photographs, technical documentation and detailed reference images, I reconstruct it component by component. In programs such as Photoshop and Illustrator, individual parts are isolated or redrawn, completed, adjusted in perspective and assembled layer by layer into a coherent overall view. Depending on the project, this can involve up to around 1,000 layers; a single cutaway illustration may require 500 to 1,000 hours of work.

My work combines engineering knowledge, digital image-making and technical illustration. What matters to me are correct proportions, a technically coherent construction and a presentation that remains clear even at a very high level of detail.

My work has been published in Octane, Porsche Fahrer, Cavallino, Oldtimer Markt and Auto Bild Klassik. Commissioned works are now held by clients in Europe, the USA, Australia and the Middle East. Fine-art prints and individual commissions based on specific vehicles or aircraft are available.
